In Hakata's Kamikawabata district, experience Nanbō-ryū Reirei (seated tea ceremony) in the company of a Hakata Maiko. Reirei is performed while seated on a chair, so it's perfect even if traditional seiza sitting is difficult for you. You will whisk your own matcha with the chasen (tea whisk). Don't worry if the technique isn't perfect—the whisking motion, the foam, the water temperature—it's all part of the experience. Your whisked tea is served with Hakata's signature confection, "Uirō" (外郎), which comes in several delicious flavors. A commemorative photo with the Hakata Maiko is included. Rather than "learning" the etiquette, this is a time to "feel" the tranquility of the moment and the beauty of every movement. Perfect for first-timers, and don't worry if you don't speak Japanese. Guidance is available in English and Korean.
