About this experience

We will style your own hair into a traditional Japanese hairstyle—not a wig. Apply white makeup (oshiroi), slip into a furisode, and transform into a Maiko in a traditional machiya townhouse in Hakata's Kamikawabata-machi. White makeup is a cosmetic art form passed down through Japanese performing arts. We will even out your complexion with white powder, then apply rouge to your eyes and lips. The dressing process begins with selecting your kimono. Once your obi sash is tied, the figure in the mirror is already a Maiko. Once you are ready, it's time for photographs. You are welcome to take as many photos as you like with your own smartphone. You can then step outside and walk to nearby Kushida Shrine just around the corner—still dressed as a Maiko. We provide a translation device. Even if you don't speak Japanese, you can communicate throughout the preparation. Please make reservations at least two business days in advance.
