In Kamikawabata, a short walk from Kushida Shrine, one machiya townhouse offers three ways to meet the maiko of Hakata. In the maiko makeover, your own hair is styled into a traditional Japanese hairstyle, not a wig; white makeup and a furisode follow, and you can take as many photos as you like before stepping out toward the shrine. The performing arts experience brings Japanese dance, live shamisen, tea and ozashiki games together, and needs to be booked at least two days ahead so the performers can be arranged. For something shorter, the tea ceremony is held on chairs, and the Otemae plan includes a photo with a Hakata maiko.
