Temari is a traditional handcraft that was born in the home. Grandmothers stitched tiny decorative thread balls one by one for their granddaughters, wishing with each needle, "May she grow into a gentle, well-rounded person." To wrap wishes into a perfect sphere—that is temari. In this session, you'll create a small temari that fits in the palm of your hand. You wind thread around a base, mark your guide points, and stitch a pattern following those marks. No advanced hand skills are required. As you repeat the same simple motions, stars begin to appear on the surface of the sphere. This "moment of emergence" is the most delightful part of the experience. Finally, you'll sew on a decorative cord and take your finished temari home the same day. It's the perfect size to attach to a bag or keychain. We provide all tools—including scissors. Please come empty-handed. Our youngest participant so far was a 6-year-old child, who completed their temari beautifully. The venue is a rental room just a 3-minute walk from Seibu Hirao Station on the Seibu Tenjin-Omuta Line. It's only a few minutes by train from Tenjin.
We'll show you a finished sample first. You'll choose your thread colors to begin.
We'll briefly explain why the shape is spherical, and who has traditionally made temari for whom.
Mark your guide points, then stitch thread between them in sequence. This is the longest and most rewarding part.
