Have you ever heard of the Three Goddesses of Munakata? Three divine goddesses appearing near the beginning of the Nihon Shoki, one of Japan's oldest mythologies. Each is enshrined in one of three locations in the Genkai Sea—Okinoshima, Ooshima, and Munakata on the mainland—and have been revered for over a thousand years. This day is a journey visiting all three goddesses in kimono over the course of a full day. In the morning, change into kimono at Genkai Ryokan, then head to Munakata Taisha Hetsumiya. Today happens to be the monthly ritual. You will participate in a sacred ceremony normally closed to tourists, dressed in kimono as a reverent visitor. At noon, enjoy Munakata's fresh seafood at Genkai Ryokan in Kandominato. In the afternoon, take the ferry to Ooshima and visit Nakatsumiya and the Remote Worship Site of Okitsumiya. If desired, English interpretation by NOREN's Miki Matsushima is available as an option (Japanese ⇄ English only). If you choose English interpretation, the Japanese guide's words will be conveyed to you in English (optional). A day crossing the sea in kimono, receiving the salt breeze, visiting deities beyond the waters. The intensity of the extraordinary allows you to touch depths of prayer normally unseen.
A sacred ceremony normally closed to tourists. Participate as a kimono-clad visitor.
