The UNESCO World Heritage site "Island of the Gods" — Munakata and the Okinoshima Associated Heritage Sites. One of its key components is Mt. Omine, towering at the center of Ōshima Island. At 224 meters above sea level, it's far from a tall mountain. But when you reach the summit after conquering 600 steps and steep ups and downs, the vista before you spreads out—— The Genkai Sea, Okinoshima, Iki Island, and Tsushima. On clear days, some say you can even see South Korea across the strait. This tour circles the entire island with a local Munakata history guide, visiting Mt. Omine's summit and Ōshima's key landmarks. Along the way, you'll stop at Munakata Taisha Nakatsumiya, WWII gun battery ruins, the windmill observatory, the Okitsumiya remote worship site, and Sayo Island at the island's northernmost tip. It's a serious hiking experience: approximately 8 kilometers. English interpretation by NOREN's Miki Matsushima is available as an optional add-on (Japanese ↔ English only). A day of physical activity will teach you about Munakata's geography, history, and faith from the soles of your feet.
