About this experience
bar aya sits on the 3rd floor of a small building in Yakuin. From 2 PM, it welcomes anyone as a quiet Japanese bar; from 7 PM, it becomes members-only. This experience opens that door for you. The owner, Honami Watanabe, began with Japanese tea. Matcha, sencha, the rituals of the tea ceremony. Then Japanese sake came, followed by wine, and now the counter has taken its present form. She whisks matcha fresh before your eyes, pours from over 10 varieties of Japanese sake always on hand, and serves obanzai—home-style small plates crafted around that morning's market offerings. There is no fixed course. It is an evening spent sitting at the counter, where you choose everything before you.
