You stand before the drum and strike the beaters downward as instructed. Then the sound you created reverberates through the floor, travels up through your feet, and echoes back deep inside your belly. Wa-taiko is less an instrument you hear with your ears than one you receive with your whole body. This 60-minute session is designed for people who have never touched wa-taiko before. How to hold the beaters, how to position your feet, how to release tension—we move through each step carefully, so you don't need to worry if you're unsure about rhythm. At the end, everyone who participated plays the same piece together. That moment when scattered sounds gradually come into harmony is the most satisfying part. Hardly any words are needed. When you face each other across the drum, movement and sound do the communicating. You can participate even if you don't understand Japanese. The venue is Sun Lake Kasuya (Kasuya Town Lifelong Learning Center) in Kasuya. It's about an 8-minute walk from JR Chōjabaru Station.
First, we listen to a true performance before we begin.
Don't grip too tightly. This is where the sound changes.
How to position your feet and your center of gravity. This is the foundation for playing with your whole body.
Where you strike and how much force you use. When you hit the right spot, the sound comes back to you.
We build up from slow to synchronized. Even if it's not perfect, we keep going.
We play through what we've practiced. That's when the scattered sounds come into harmony.
