bar aya sits on the third floor of a small building in Yakuin. From 2 PM it's a quiet Japanese bar open to anyone; from 7 PM it becomes members-only. This experience opens that door. The owner, Honami Watanabe, began with Japanese tea. Matcha, sencha, the formal rituals of the tea ceremony. Japanese sake came next, then wine, and now the counter reflects this evolution. We prepare a bowl of matcha right before your eyes, select from over 10 varieties of Japanese sake always in stock, and serve obanzai (small Kyoto-style dishes) chosen to match that morning's market. There is no set course. You sit at the counter and spend the evening with someone who has chosen everything that's here.
